Operation NEW YORK

Location, east of Phu Bai
Description: This was a sweep operation is conducted by a multi-company US Marine force about 12 miles southeast of Hue in Thua Thein Province and then on the Phu Thu Peninsula east of Phu Bai. A reinforced Marine infantry battalion and HMM-361 guarded the Phu Bai airfield as the northern most USMC base area. The operation started when the CG of the ARVN 1st Div asked for the Marines to sweep an area as part of the ARVN operation LAM SON 234. It began when two companies moved by trucks up Route 1 to Pho Lai and HMM-361 helilifted another company into positions to the east near Quang Dien. They did not make contact with any enemy units and returned to Phu Bai
